Holden Caulfield

Holden is our narrator and main character. He is a teenage boy who is in a mental hospital in California. He is a troubled an very unstable person. He is in search of innocence and people who aren't phonies, although he is one himself. He has trouble dealing with the lost of his dead brother and is on the verge of emotional collapse..

Phoebe Caulfield

Phoebe is Holden's younger sister. She is one of the few people who listen and understand Holden. She is very mature for her age and her innocence is one of the reasons Holden loves her so much.

Allie Caulfield

Allie is Holden's deceased brother. According to Holden, he was the most intelligent Caulfield and he was very friendly. His death is the main reason of Holden's breakdown. Holden has a baseball glove that Allie used to write poems on. Holden also wears a red baseball cap, which is the color of Allie's hair.

D.B. Caulfield

D.B. is Holden's older brother. Holden dislikes him because he writes for Hollywood movies in order to gain money. In the past, he had written a series of short stories Holden had really enjoyed.

Ackley

Ackley is Holden's neighbor in his dorm. He has terrible hygiene and few friends. Holden feels bad for him but they are not really friends.

Stradlater

Stradlater is Holden's roommate at Pencey Prep. He is handsome and very popular among the students. Holden considers him a "secret slob" because although he dresses nicely and appears clean, he is very messy.

Jane Gallagher

Jane is an old friend of Holden's. She used to hang out with him and play checkers. Holden is attracted to her but never made any advance beecause he is afraid she won't remember him.

Sally Hayes

Sally has dated Holden on several occasions. She is attractive but Holden doesn't think she is very smart. He is sexually attracted to her and actually mentions considering marrying her.

Maurice and Sunny

Maurice is a pimp and Sunny is a prostitute. Maurice offers a prostitute to Holden. When Holden fails to connect with Sunny, she asks for $10. Holden gives her $5 and Maurice comes and beats him up.

James Castle

A former classmate of Holden's. He jumped out of a window while Holden watched him die.

Mr. Antolini

Mr. Antolini is Holden's former English teacher. He is a close friend of his family. Holden goes to him for help but ends up running from his house because Holden feels he was making sexual advances toward him.
